John Barnett, CFP, CLU – Chairman and CEO 

Mr. Barnett has been involved in the life insurance industry since 1969. Following a very successful sales career with Sun Life of Canada, he was appointed the sales manager and ultimately became the branch manager of Sun Life’s Bermuda office. Under his guidance, the Bermuda operation became the leading branch in sales within its region. After being transferred to Canada in 1981, he developed an underachieving operation in Vancouver into one of the country’s leading branches, in both sales and profitability. Mr. Barnett has held senior positions in both Bermuda and Canada in life insurance industry associations, completing 3 years of service in 1997, to the 19,000 members of the Canadian Association of Financial Planners (Advocis) as one of its three Regional Vice-Chairs.

Mr. Barnett joined L&A in November of 2002 to assume the position of Vice President of Sales and Marketing and was appointed President in 2007. Prior to joining L&A, Mr. Barnett was with First International Capital, an investment banking firm that specialized in the formation and financing of insurance and reinsurance companies sponsored by alternative asset fund managers. In addition, Mr. Barnett raised equity capital for insurance start-ups as well as insurance related private equity funds. Prior to joining First International, Mr. Barnett ran a successful insurance practice for 5 years in Vancouver, B.C., Canada advising clients on a range of insurance and investment related products.

Deborah O’Donnell, ACA, CFA - Director

Ms. O’Donnell has been involved in the financial services industry in Bermuda since 1988 when she qualified as an English Chartered Accountant. She became a Chartered Financial Analyst in 1997. Prior to joining the board of L&A in November of 2002, she had held, for seven years, senior financial positions with two Bermuda based trust companies and more recently had acted as a consultant to First International Capital.
